Unleashing the Power of Boards and Leadership to Promote Effective Compliance Programs

In my journey as a healthcare compliance professional, I’ve had the privilege of helping healthcare organizations nationwide. I’ve witnessed the dramatic shift that can occur when senior leaders and board members champion the cause of healthcare compliance. Far more than a procedural formality, a dynamic compliance program emerges as a strategic foundation that mitigates risk, enhances quality and safety, and protects an organization’s most prized asset – its reputation.

Many compliance professionals express frustration at the perceived lack of internal support for their efforts. Often, the missing ingredient is a robust strategy to ask for, secure, and sustain that crucial backing.

When I deliver compliance education to boards and senior leaders, I empower them with actionable steps they can take to make a difference:

1. Embed Compliance in Organizational Culture: Compliance shouldn’t be an isolated set of episodes, but a continuous dialogue deeply woven into the fabric of the organization’s culture. Open, transparent conversations on compliance and a clear message about its significance are paramount.

2. Create a Safe Space for Reporting: Encourage an open, blame-free culture where staff can voice their compliance concerns fearlessly. Early detection and mitigation of compliance risks hinge on this critical step.

3. Invest in Compliance: Allocate the necessary tools, technology, and talent – whether in-house or external – to advance compliance efforts effectively.

4. Ask the Right Questions: Understand the Compliance Program by asking insightful questions about its structure and functions.

5. Promote Prompt and Appropriate Resolutions: Foster a proactive approach that rapidly addresses and resolves compliance issues, deploying necessary resources when indicated.

6. Adopt a Dynamic Approach to Compliance: Compliance isn’t a static checkbox. It’s a fluid, evolving process that demands regular audits, risk assessments, and program reviews to stay current and effective amidst an ever-changing regulatory landscape.

Leaders’ commitment to compliance resonates throughout an organization. Going beyond mere regulatory compliance to embody a culture of integrity and ethical conduct at every level isn’t just a noble goal; it’s a game-changer.
